Disheartening Experience with Chestnut Grove Memory Care We had a relatively brief stay at Chestnut Hills, but unfortunately, it was a deeply disheartening experience that raised serious concerns about the overall quality of care provided. Our family member, a Stage 2 Alzheimer’s patient, was transferred from a hospital to Chestnut Hills' memory care unit. From the start, we clearly communicated potential health concerns and were assured by the facility director that monitoring and preventative steps would be taken. Unfortunately, those assurances did not translate into action. Over the course of just 10 days, our loved one went from walking the halls unassisted to requiring a wheelchair. Most concerning was that no staff member raised any red flags about this obvious and rapid physical decline. It wasn’t until we followed up with the facility director that we discovered the medical testing—promised as a precaution against exactly this kind of deterioration—had never been done. We were told we could take our family member to an outside doctor ourselves. Upon doing so, the physician immediately called a rescue squad, and our loved one was hospitalized to address the very concerns we had flagged from the beginning. We informed the facility director of the hospitalization. Shockingly, we received no follow-up until five days later—only when he learned that we would not be returning to the facility did he inquire about our family member’s condition. Our key takeaways from this experience: • Severe lack of continuity in care. • Poor communication among staff and with family. • The facility director seemed unable to maintain consistent oversight. • A personal in-room video camera was extremely beneficial. • Quality of staff interactions varied significantly: about 20% were excellent, 15% negative, and 65% perfunctory at best. The few positives: the facility appeared clean, and some individual staff members were clearly caring and competent. For these reasons alone, we rated Chestnut Hills a 2 out of 5—we fear there are worse places, but this is far from the level of care any vulnerable person deserves. We share this review in hopes that others can make more informed decisions for their loved ones.

The warm compassionate atmosphere at Chestnut Grove is what sets them apart from others. The staff here wants their residents to thrive and they truly care for them. Highly recommend them here!

My mother moved into Chestnut Grove about a month ago, having switched from another facility, Harmony at Hanover, that has gone downhill dramatically. We couldn't be happier with the change. The food is, as my mother put it, fabulous ... and getting compliments from her about food is difficult. The staff are also fantastic, and she's really enjoyed the activities so far. The building is a bit older, but the level of care provided there is outstanding. I'd highly recommend checking it out if you're searching for an assisted living facility in the Richmond area.

My father spent 8 months at Chestnut Grove before having to go into a skilled nursing facility because of his failing health. Staff did an amazing job while he was there. They were always attentive to his needs and made us feel like he was there only resident even though they had many others. I would recommend Chestnut Grove for your loved one without hesitation.

I have without reservation entrusted Chestnut Grove with two precious individuals that I love dearly. I have greatly appreciated the professionalism of the management staff and other office personnel. The care and hospitality staff have attended to the needs of my dear friends with great respect, courtesy and kindness. I have been most pleased with their care and the value for the cost of their comfortable living in a well maintained facility. The food has been enjoyed and rated delicious on every level by them and by me. I am on campus two or three times per week and have experienced and observed the staff and happenings at various times throughout the day and evening. I have never witnessed anything that would give me cause to worry or be of concern. I am most pleased with the overall services provided for my loved ones. I would recommend Chestnut Grove without hesitation to anyone desiring to review further the accommodations provided at this charming retirement community.
