My sister has been living at Hawthorne Gardens for 5 years. There has been a huge improvement since my last visit a bit over 12 months ago. It was very clean, meals have improved and I saw kind, helpful, caring staff in every capacity.Very good communication with my sister, and with her family members. And it is in a beautiful neighbourhood- we so enjoyed walking to look at the gardens nearby.

My Mom has been at Hawthorne Gardens for 7 years. Until this past year I couldn't have rated the community higher than 3 stars (and some years were a 1 star). The past year with a new management team and a staff of people who work hard and care, I can confidently give the highest rating possible.

This is a great little facility in the middle of a popular SE Portland Belmont/Hawthorne neighborhood. Every time I go visit the residents seem happy and the employees are helpful and always greet me when I walk in. I see the residents keeping busy in the garden or sitting on the front porch eager to chat. They have a little neighborhood library box out in the back if you walk by.

My loved one has been residing at Hawthorne Gardens in Assisted Living for over 10 years now. We’ve experienced multiple changes in ownership and management, high staff turnover, and annual price hikes that are reported to be consistent within the industry. And he continues to reside there and thrive after 10 years. Part of that is due to the consistency of trusted key players who keep the place running, who genuinely care about residents and communicate with respect & transparency. The activities, routines, and care according to his service plan are at just the right level for him to maintain the independence he still wants, while maintaining his safety and care. One of these beloved key players who has been the face of HG, literally the smiling face you see when you enter, is sadly moving on after several years to relocate. She will be missed dearly by residents, staff, and families alike. Management are working to develop key players in these leadership roles and build a dependable, caring team of staff and caregivers. One area that could use improvement would be the food, which often seems to be one of the most common complaints among residents. Management does meet with residents for feedback and try to adjust menu offerings for variety and it can be a challenge to please everyone. My loved one has special dietary needs and while we understand the inability to fully guarantee no cross contamination, like restaurants, it would make a huge impact if they could develop a set of options that were identified as GF, DF, vegan, etc., on the menu. That way a resident could order accordingly and not have to guess or communicate through new staff, and accidentally be served or ingest ingredients to which they are sensitive or allergic.

My sister and I just visited my brother at Hawthorne Gardens. Things have certainly changed. The first person we met was a med tech named Josh. Wow was he a breath of fresh air! He addressed my brother by name and engaged him in a conversation. It was easy to tell that there was a strong, friendly and supportive relationship between the two. Next, we were greeted by Katie who turned out to be the new executive Director. She knew who we were visiting and who we were. Other staff greeted us and my brother by name. We felt very welcomed and loved the friendly and upbeat atmosphere.
