I am writing to express my deep concern and disappointment regarding the standard of care my mother is receiving at Palmetto Assisted Living in Murrells Inlet, SC. For five consecutive days, my mother experienced a persistent and worsening cough. The sound was deeply troubling—rattling and wet—clearly not something that should have been ignored. Despite being under the care of supposedly professionals in an assisted living facility, no one took the initiative to assess her symptoms or seek medical attention on her behalf by contacting the family. After witnessing no response from the staff, I brought my mother to urgent care myself. She was diagnosed with pneumonia—a serious and potentially life-threatening condition, particularly in elderly individuals. This diagnosis could have been reached much sooner, and proper treatment initiated, had someone at Palmetto Assisted Living been attentive and responsive. I informed the med tech at night that my mother had chills and a deep cough, she responded that she would inform the day nurse. Evidently the day nurse did not find this to be of concern. It is also deeply troubling when an assisted living facility involves a third-party health group under the pretense of supporting a resident’s care, only for that group to submit inaccurate or fraudulent billing. In my mother’s case, this health provider claimed to have rendered services to her—documenting visits and care she never received. In reality, they were never even in the room with her. This kind of deceptive practice not only exploits vulnerable individuals but also erodes the trust families place in elder care institutions. Assisted living facilities have a responsibility to monitor the health of their residents, communicate with families, and take appropriate action when issues arise. In this instance, that duty of care was clearly neglected. I have been disgusted with the downfall of Palmettos Assisted Living. When we placed my mother in this facility the attentive care was impressive. That was 4 years ago and we have seen nothing by failure in the last 2 years. Their Director of Nursing is an LPN who is only licensed to provide basic patient care under the supervision of a registered nurse and physician. Currently, I was not able to find any registered nurses on site and would love them to prove me wrong. Families trust these facilities with the well-being of their loved ones. That trust should be honored with diligence, compassion, and professionalism.

My dad has been a resident at The Palmettos for almost a year. I am thankful every day that I chose this facility for him. The facility itself is beautiful and has everything he needs, plus some unexpected extras. The residents are always busy with various activities and entertainment. It truly feels like a happy place all the time. And I would break the Internet if I tried to fully express how wonderful the whole staff is. Honestly, they are like family to us now. The Palmettos gets a 5 star review from me!

Management and staff chronically absent and uncaring. Meals are pathetic. Christmas breakfast was stale pastries and fruit from a can. Christmas dinner was bean soup and a side salad. Management and staff DO NOT CARE. steer clear.

The facility is beautiful... BUT the management is HORRIBLE. It's always short staffed especially on the weekends. Hopefully it will have a better turn over when the right people starts running the building.
