My stepmom was forced to live here for 6 months due to the care she required and her Mainecare situation. Thankfully, we were able to finally move her to a much better place. There are a couple of employees that are kind and try very hard to care for the residents. Unfortunately, they are overshadowed by the amount of rude employees. Specifically, the head nurse was extremely rude and complained about her job every single time I had to speak with her. The staff in general does NOT keep these residents clean and there is a constant bed bug issue that they continued to lie about, saying they were only treating to prevent bedbugs, not that they were actually there. I know this is a last resort for many, but if you have a choice, go anywhere else.

Specialist in neglect and high risk practices. They work hard to freeze out family and are quite successful. There are no repercussions and no better options available so please get yourself onto some sort of medication for stress before placing a loved one here. I do suspect that jail might be a safer option. Feel free to call and complain, the admin is good at telling you off when you do get a call back about a concern. Of course there is no consideration for the frustration you feel, over the daily calls and unheard messages for weeks attempting to get a response, when they do get back to you. I don't know anyone who could keep their cool in these situations, even with medication. They don't watch or monitor dementia patients, they are free to roam the streets. Dumpster diving and appearing homeless is no concern to them. Please feel free to report this activity when witnessed, though to who I don't know. The system is broken and the state of Maine doesn't care anymore than pcal does.

Portland Center for Assisted Living fills a role in the system that few others are willing or able to. With primarily residential care beds, shared rooms, and a deeply practical approach, PCAL serves a population often left behind in the conversation. It’s not glamorous—but it’s essential. In a landscape where affordability is rare, this community provides a critical safety net with quiet consistency.

This place is a dump. Cigarette butts all over the parking lot, a dirty fish tank with no light in the entryway and it smells like a cafeteria filled with dirty ashtrays. Money is their one concern. The person we were to meet with was an hour later with no apology or explanation. The rooms are tiny and depressing and the place is understaffed. I wouldn't put anyone I care about there. If I could give it less than one star, I would.

I would add 0 if it was available. I toured this facility for my father who has dementia, and it was the filthiest place I’ve ever seen. The rooms were less than 100sq feet with 2 people. There were cigarette butts all over the parking lot, and while I was visiting someone was physically eating one without being monitored. There were no staff in the dining area where several residents were sleeping. Their fish tank had no light and a layer of scum I can only describe as algae. The woman was over an hour late meeting with us, and we were reprimanded for not having masks on after walking around over an hour without them. It was hands down the worst experience I’ve ever had for a living place. It was what I would describe as the place you put someone you don’t care about.
