Brookdale Hawthorne Lakes AL

Because of physical problems, my mom moved from her house into Brookdale Hawthorn Lakes in December 2025. Hawthorn Lakes was recommended to us by a friend, whose mom and grandmother had both lived there and loved it. It was a sudden, unplanned change in my mom's life, and she's in her 90s, so we were concerned for her and worried about how the move would go. In addition to her physical problems, she also has some dietary limitations, which led to her being refused by a different independent/assisted living facility, so we weren't sure whether she'd be accepted anywhere. Hawthorn Lakes staff came up with solutions to help my mom with daily living tasks, and they even came up with a solution to handle her dietary requirements. Their care and their creativity in generating solutions to help my mom show that they are absolutely dedicated to what they do. Everyone at Hawthorn Lakes is great. From my initial visit and meeting with Amber, to today, everything has gone smoothly. I go there nearly every day, so I've gotten a good feel for it and for the staff. The staff all exhibit the ideal mix of being professional yet friendly and warm. They're very approachable whenever we have a question or concern. I trust them completely with my mom. She feels safe, happy, and comfortable there. They've made an extremely difficult part of her life easier and calmer. The Brookdale at Home program ensures that my mom gets the attention and assistance that she needs with various daily tasks. The program is entirely flexible -- you can choose however many caregiver visits you want per day, and whatever amount of time per visit that you want. The caregivers are fabulous. Their kindness and patience are truly incredible. The entire facility is clean and well-maintained. The common areas are large and welcoming. The morning fitness classes are great. My mom's apartment is bright, spacious, and pleasant. We look forward to the springtime, when we can take my mom out to Big Bear Lake and Century Park, which are adjacent to her building. We're very happy so far, and would definitely recommend Hawthorn Lakes.

Our mom always said she’d end up at Hawthorne Lakes (Brookdale), and she did. There were many obstacles along the way to her getting there, including a stop off at another assisted living place first, hospitalizations, rehab, etc. She’s older than most residents and has substantial health issues, but a solid mind and memory. The team at Hawthorne Lakes bent over backwards to figure out ways to make it work for mom to be able to stay in her apartment there and get the help she needs. It was a refreshing change from where she had been before, and the Brookdale at Hawthorne Lakes team is so kind, caring, and professional. Not only that, it was priced well under the other place, which had great facilities but lacked the care and staff. The only reason for not giving Brookdale 5-stars has to do with the facility itself. It’s a bit narrow in some hallways and when everyone is out and about, it can get a little tight in some common areas, especially when so many residents are using walkers and wheelchairs. That being said, they make it easy for families to spend time together in special rooms or to even reserve a dining area for a special occasion, which our family has done several times. We’ve loved dealing with everyone at HL Brookdale, and know that they will do everything in their power to problem-solve a situation to make it workable and comfortable for the resident and their family.

My mom has been at Brookdale Hawthorn Lakes for 16 months now. She really is happy about her decision to move here. She lived in her home since the mid 70’s. From day one she met people and has made new friends. The staff is warm and friendly and everyone seems to know her. I would recommend Brookdale Hawthorn Lakes to everyone.

They charged my mom for large garbage bags tonight. They took away the flowers from my father's funeral that were placed in a group room with permission but they were removed by corporate? Allow the edits from me to continue throughout her stay. to be continued. They will nickel and dime you while also denying you everything. $8,000 out of pocket you would THINK they could cater to her needs. ETA 11/11/25: They addressed her concerns this evening. They explained that the garbage bags "the residents are responsible for garbage bags, not the 'short-timers' (mom's words)", and they accept funeral flowers often but 'break up the flowers to various residents and put them in vases often, and 'she' who visited to address this today (my mom asked me to leave her name out of this) will use this as a training opportunity for her staff.' I am very grateful that they addressed this with my mom, but at the very least, I had hoped that a public response to me would have also been addressed seeing as I now know that they have seen this review considering the conversation had today with my dear mom.

Our mom moved into Brookdale Hawthorn Lakes in January and we couldn’t be happier with her choice. The staff is friendly and attentive. Her apartment is modern and nicely appointed with great storage. There is a large variety of activities and amenities and something for everyone to enjoy. We are so happy to have her close by and knowing she loves her new home is a bonus!! We highly recommend Brookdale Hawthorn Lakes!!
